SOUTHERN IJAW L.G.A PRESS RELEASE.
Following a bye-law passed by the legislative arm of the Southern Ijaw Local Government, the Local Government Oil and Gas Taskforce came into force, working closely with the JTF, Nigerian Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the National Orientation Agency, amongst others.
During a routine patrol of the rivers and creeks of Southern Ijaw by the LocalGovernment Oil and Gas Taskforce that checks crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, an armed bandit numbering thirteen onboard a speedboat outran the Taskforce attacking its personnel.
When several warning shots into the air by the Nigerian Navy stationed in Peremabiri couldn’t deter the bandits, security personnel attached to the Southern Ijaw Oil and Gas Taskforce responded with a shot on the thigh of the leader – Mr. Kingsley Otokolo after three warning shots on the air to neutralized the attack on armed security personnels by the bandits.
Manoeuvring the boat to the shoreline, the armed bandits escaped into the forest. Afterwards, responsive community leaders reported Mr. Kingsley Otokolo and two members of his gang while seeking medical treatment for his injured thigh. They have since been arrested, while ten others are still atlarge. By this announcement, the general public is requested to please reportinformation related to the arrest of the other members of the gang.
Though being medically attended to, Mr. Kingsley and members of his gang, will, in due course, be arraigned before a competent court of law.
This attack on the Southern Ijaw Oil and Gas Taskforce was purported to havebeen carried out on the directive of one Mr. Paul Eris aka General Ogunboss, who has himself, in recent times carried out two botched attacks on hiscommunity (Peremabiri) to regain forceful control.
It is pertinent to highlight that only personnel of the JTF and NSCDC carry arms and not civilian members. The inclusion of the Department of State Service makes this even more compelling. Hence, activities of the Southern Ijaw Oil and Gas Taskforce have been commended by federal government agencies like the Nigerian Oil Spillage and Detection Agency, amongst others.
