BAYELSA GOVT IS COMMITTED TO WORKERS WELFARE—-OBUEBITE
Bayelsa state government disclosed at the weekend that various economic policies aimed at ameliorating the suffering of the people especially the workforce has been put in place, attributing the present economic predicament to dwindling allocation from the Federation account and low Internally Generated Revenue.
Disclosing this to the newsmen in Yenagoa, the State Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite said the state monthly allocation has nosedived to abysmal level of to One Billion Six Hundred MillionNaira(#1,600,000,000.00) only, which is not even enough to pay half of civil servants salaries in a month.
The present administration, according to him, has initiated various policies aimed at ameliorating the suffering of the people but it is sadden to note that some people including serving and retired civil servants are hell bent in thwarting the efforts of the present administration , all in the name of politics.
‘Prior to the advent of the present administration, pay roll fraud was on geometric increase, but on assumption of office, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson put necessary machineries in motion to checkmate the activities of the fraudsters. This, eventually yielded a fruitful dividend as the wage bill was reduced from over N6 billion to N4 billion.
‘Recently, the government set up verification committee set up to look into the issues of suspected bloated wage bill to ensure that committed civil servants are not denied their legitimate income as well as cut the activities of some criminal gangs who smile all the way to the bank without rendering any service to the state’
He, thereby, assured civil servants in the state of government preparedness to clear its outstanding salaries as well as purge the service of some negative minded individuals who defraud the government by posing to be civil servants.
To this end the government is calling on all genuine, honest, hardworking and committed workers to join hands with it and fish out those who do not mean well so the state would not completely go into recession as government is determined to get to the root of the matter and will very soon unveil measures for addressing the criminal action
He added that it is only the enemies of the state who can be involved in such evil act, announcing that allocation for last month is a miserable sum of one point six billion naira which represents only fifteen percent of what the government received a year ago.
Hon. Obuebite pointed out that while salaries, pension and recurrent expenditure of government has risen, it’s main source of revenue has evaporated and therefore urged Bayelsans to join hands to salvage the state by making constructive contribution and personal sacrifice as well as look beyond government to ensure their dignity and wellbeing.
He added that the good people of Bayelsa State have faced and overcame various challenges such as floods, environmental devastation and wanton destruction of lives and property and surely they would overcome this current one.
