…………I AM A CRUSADER OF PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE NIGER DELTA ENVIRONMENT.
The attention of the Care-taker Committee Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local government Council Hon. Joshua Maciver has been drawn to a malicious publication in Leadership Newspaper, dated 24th April 2016, titled “Arrest of Agip Bomber Sparks Row Between Bayelsa APC, PDP” which laboured in vain to blackmail the Chairman. The said publication stated that Hon. Maciver sponsored the alleged bomber of Agip pipeline in Olugboboro Community last month. The publication added that the suspect Mr. Seiminiyefa Perekeyi was arrested after the incident and claimed that the suspect disclosed to the interrogators that Hon. Maciver sponsored him to carry out the attack on the pipeline. According to the publication, in order to bury the case, the Chairman and other members of PDP are allegedly planning to kill the suspect who is in the custody of security agents.
Leadership also quoted a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, representing Brass Constituency 1, Hon Israel Sunny-Goli as the source of the information. To put record straight, there is no iota of truth in the said publication; it is part of the propaganda machine and smear campaign put in place by the former Coordinator of the Silga Task Force on Oil and Gas Mr. David Lyon to cover his dastard act while they were at the helm of affairs at the Task Force on Oil and Gas. The former Coordinator of the Oil and Gas Task Force should be held responsible for the pipeline explosion in Olugboboro and had nothing to do with Hon. Maciver who is a crusader of protection and preservation of the Niger Delta environment. The publication was a calculated attempt to tarnish the thriving image of Hon. Maciver and a personal attack on the Chairman will not distract him from performing his duties. How can a responsible Newspaper link Hon. Maciver to pipeline vandalisation? It is ironic that Hon. Maciver can be ascribed as a sponsor of pipeline bomber. This is a man who has devoted all his life to eliminate pollution of the Niger Delta environment by Multinational Oil Companies operating in the area, despite obvious risk to his life. As the chairman, he has vowed to fight pipeline vandalisation which has continued to destroy the Niger Delta environment. It was also meant to destroy the cordial relationship between Agip and the Chairman but they have failed woefully in their bid. In addition, Hon. Sunny-Goli and the Leadership Newspaper Reporter should tender unreserved apology to the Chairman within three days of this publication or the Chairman will take any measure deemed necessary. It is surprising to note that a National Newspaper could write such a sensitive and touchy issue without hearing from Hon. Maciver. Indeed such a report smacks of the highest levels of unprofessionalism exhibited by a journalist. Media professionals are advised to balance their stories because that is one of the ethics of the profession, negation of this spells doom and anarchy to the society.
