ALL IS NOT WELL WITH THE BAYELSA CHAPTER OF THE APC. AN OFFICIAL SECRET DOCUMENT LEAKED TO OUR REPORTER STATED THAT SOME FACTION OF THE APC IN BAYELSA WHO IS SAID TO BE LOYAL TO THE AUTHENTIC CHAIRMAN MR TIWEI ORUNIMIGHA, LEAD BY A FORMER APC GOVERNORSHIP ASPIRANT MR PREYE AGANABA SAID TO BE CRYING OUT TO PRESIDENT BUHARI TO MAKE SURE CHIEF TIMIPRE SYLVA DOES NOT COMES OUT VICTORIOUS AT THE TRIBUNAL AGAINST GOV. DICKSON.
POSITION PAPER ON THE STATE OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS IN BAYELSA STATE
The initial promise of our party, the APC, was to engineer change across the country. Nationally, this party came to be in a time we were taunted by corruption, ineptitude and unabashed mediocrity. It was a time there wasn’t much value in being a Nigerian, a time premium was chipped off the crown of morality and social sanity, a time we were less than a foot close to complete anarchy. So, it could be said that we, as a party, are a natural response to the pervading darkness. It was in this light we became more than just an option but infact the institutionalization of salvation. Nigerians did not just choose us, that is to relegate this change and count it materially, what happened was Nigerians chose redemption, their individual salvations.
For the startup of Bayelsa state APC, though the story might be basically the same, the intricacy is unique and that has been my reason for showing solidarity with Chief Tiwei Orunimighe as chairman.
Earlier in 2014 I called Chief Tiwei to a meeting where we can say the seed of Bayelsa APC was planted. We discussed in a sitting room and explored the possibilities of establishing the APC in our state. We saw the challenges, we anticipated how steep a mountain we had to climb, we knew it was a journey of no return. But, bravely, we went ahead with plans which we executed. Tiwei became state chairman almost immediately and this tripled his efforts.
I paid for our first offices from strenuously gotten funds. I remember a typical case when a former chief of staff of the Bayelsa state Government ordered police officers to close down our complex with the declaration that ‘a boko Haram party cannot be planted in Bayelsa state’. Ironically, that same man, Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, decamped to the same APC and was elevated to the status of a chieftain. For such an act for instance, it is easy and perhaps expedient to accept that this is politics, but the idea of such a man who once terrorized the APC with random impunity being elevated more than the victims of his old impunity is at the crux of the current crises in the state.
Many of our stalwarts and leaders were arrested and hounded. I was always raising money for the establishment of legal teams for the release of our people. Chief Tiwei and I sacrificed our hard-earned money to host the first ever Ward, Local government and state congresses. All this while Sylva was there, based in Abuja and basking in the euphoria of being ‘the party leader’. He could be likened to a man who would take credit publicly for his educated child but who didn’t make an effort, even when he could, to make that child educated. If not for the sacrifices of some of us, APC Bayelsa state would have been lulling. We did both physical and mental work. The former president was Bayelsan and there was the replicating belief that the PDP was an ‘Ijaw party’. We had to break that falsehood as well, but of course with our casualty lists piling up.
Chief Timipre Sylva has only benefitted from the platform and has shown disdain instead of appreciation for the architects of that platform. Sylva has failed to understand that party should be supreme even to his lofty ambitions that stretches to the doors of the 2019 elections, he should know that there is a difference between hisfriends and party faithfuls, that even if he must build a personal political empire it must not be on the detriment of the party and those who gave him that opportunity and he must not be suspicious of every man who can stand upright.
I affirm to the party’s stand in suspending Chief Sylva until proper investigations are exhausted on his charges of anti-party activities and financial indiscipline.
I also affirm to the following stances of the party
1. That of the 5 positions of executive secretaries for Bayelsa state, the party should have 4 slots. Sylva already has in his pockets the ministerial slot and amnesty chairmanship.
2. That the Executive Director of projects, Mr Amatsulu Tuoyo, be removed as he has out-stayed his tenure. In the rotation policy of NDDC, that position was to have been for Bayelsa, but the last dispensation altered that setting and it erroneously remains with Delta state now.
3. That the Executive Secretary of Local Content, Mr Patrick Oba, be removed. The man in question was a personal assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan and only became Local Content Executive secretary days to Mr Jonathan’s handover.
4. That the rector of Federal Politechnic Ekowe be removed for partisan unfairness in the institution. Students and members of staff who are only remotely assumed to be members or sympathisers of APC have been on the receiving end.
5. That the Minister of State for Agric and Rural development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, resigns pending the end of the allegations on him including buying of his ministerial slots and non-membership of our party
If these positions could be consolidated on, and Sylva’s ambitions trimmed to the current reality and ideals of our party, I am certain Bayelsa APC will be back on her foot again. The people must believe in the things we promised, in the things we believe in. Our unique history must not be washed away by one man’s attempt at empire and we, as a party, must not be dragged to the same shamefulness that inspired us to action in the first place.
