Fierce and straight talking Niger Delta activist, Ankio Briggs, has lambasted the government for ignory the Niger Delta.
Speaking recently in an event, she came down on the system that has brought the Niger Delta to its present state. She decried the situation where Niger delta people are treated as second citizens in their own country.
“We don’t want to be carried along. Who are you to carry us along? We want to walk hand in hand as Nigerians. We are all Nigerians. We all got independence together. No Nigerian is superior to another. This idea that some people must conquer others is not acceptable”, she stated. “The issues that The Avengers are raising are the same issues that Adaka raised, the same issues that Saro Wiwa raised, the same issues that Tompolo and others raised. We must address these issues or we’ll continue running around in circles and going backwards.”
“You ask us to hold our leaders accountable. In the same breath you say they have immunity. How do we hold them accountable. It is the responsibility of the Govt to hold them accountable. Is it the fisherman that should hold NDDC accountable? Should we drag our past governors out and stone them in the village square?”
“We don’t want 13%. We want to control the resources and pay tax to the Federal Govt. This will enable other regions to also explore what is on their land. We want fiscal federalism.”
“The situation where 80% of the oil wells are owned by people who are not from the Niger Delta is unacceptable.”
