A 26 years old Hausa Indigene from Adamawa State and three other persons were yesterday confirmed arrested at Twon Brass in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State by the men of the State Police over alleged tying and beating to death a suspected theif in the area.
Leadership gathered that though over 33 suspects were arrested over the gory killing of the suspected thief that went viral on Facebook last week, the arrested four persons were accused to beating the suspect and it eventually led to his death.
The Chairman of Brass Local Government Council,Hon. Bello Bina, who confirmed the development during a call on him by the Management Team of the Daar Communications,owners of AIT and Ray Power stations in Bayelsa, said the incident,which occurred a fortnight agoa nearly threw the Council headquaters into tumoil and triggered a row between Hausa indigenes and their host Ijaw community of Brass.
According to Bina, the arrested persons were accused of tying the suspected thief with rope and beat him to death for allegedly breaking into a petty trader shop in Twon Brass,” Nobody has the right to beat another person to death over stealing. It is jungle justice and it is crime.”
Hon. Bina said though the jungle justice and the arrest of the accused Hausa Indigene sparked a row due to the involvement of the arrested boy in the gory killing of the suspected thief who is an Ijaw indigene,” We have intervened and the right thing will be done. Many of the Ijaw boys and the deceased family claimed that the arrest was partisan. But we have calmed all nerves and the rule of law must take root in Brass.”
He also confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the State Police Command and autopsy is expected to be conducted on the corpse of the killed suspected thief.
