Governor, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State today met leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other affiliated bodies to discuss issues affecting the State civil service.
The governor commended workers of the state for the understanding and maturity expressed throughout last year for accepting the fifty percent of their salaries. He stated that this year, salaries will be paid as at when due and the backlog will be handled. He also commended workers for being diligent in their duty.
“I want to commend civil servants in this State for the show of understanding and maturity for the delay in the government meeting up with salary obligations owing as a result of economic realities facing the nation”
Governor Dickson who expressed the government’s stance on instilling discipline in the service said, government will no longer condone any form of absenteeism, truancy, ghost workers, over bloated wage bill and other irregularities.
In their separate speeches, the NLC and TUC Chairmen, Comr. John Ndiomu and Comr. Tare Dounanagha TUC Chairman, while commending the governor for his development strides in the State, made it clear that the union does not support absenteeism and nonchalant attitude of workers.
They added, that the government should reverse back to status of meeting it’s salary obligations to workers by paying before any month runs out as promised and stressed the need for labour to have regular meetings with the state government in order to bridge the communication gap.
